Did you know?

  • The density of gold is 19.3 tonnes per cubic meter. That makes it 70% denser than lead.
  • One “cup of gold” weighs almost 5kg (nearly 20 times as much as one cup of water).
  • All the gold ever mined in human history to 2007 is about 150,000 tonnes. This has a volume of 7,770 cubic meters — which is a cube a bit less than 20 meters on each side, or a soccer field covered to a depth of a bit over 1 meter.
  • Gold melts at 1064oC.
  • Gold is the most malleable and ductile of metals. One gram can be beaten into a sheet about 1m square.

The Price of Gold - per oz, pound, gram and ton.

Gold Equivalent Values - Because many gold miners 'dig' other minerals it's worth understanding the relationship between gold and other commodities.

Convert Grades - %, grams/ton, ppm, ppb.

  * A common ounce is known as an avoir dupois ounce, and is 28.34g. Troy ounces are only used for precious metals, gems and gunpowder, but are 10% larger,  1 Troy oz is 31.1034768 g, and is either referred to as 'oz' or 'ozt'. Since all gold ounces are troy ounces, if 'oz' is used with gold, it refers to the Troy ounce. To make things extra complex, a Troy pound is smaller than a common 'pound', because it only contains 12 troy ounces, not 16 oz, as the avoir dupois 'common' pound does. The troy pound is 373.24 g, while an avoirdupois pound is 453.59g. GoldNerds promises never to refer to either a common ounce, or a troy pound again. Our prices-per-pound are per 'common' pound. No wonder most countries have gone metric.
