"GoldNerds has saved me literally hundreds of hours. It's a phenomenal resource and a total 'no brainer' for any goldmining investor...a gold mine of knowledge in front of me, for peanuts."
Marcus Blockey, Currumbin QLD

"... your programme is brilliant. Comprehensive, easy to use and accurate. By the time I correct all the inaccuracies on every other programme I might as well do it myself. I still check yours but haven't caught you out yet."
Graham Pitkethley, NSW

"I've spent the last few hours in absolute ecstasy (I know, I'm sick) at the wealth of information you've put into such an easy to use spreadsheet. You've practically smashed my research time to zero. Thank you! "

1.   Macro or security alerts (The most common problem!)

GoldNerds spreadsheet uses Macros. They’re harmless, and you need them. Without them you can’t sort, view or hide columns, set up your own custom view, or update stock prices over the Internet. The macros in this spreadsheet are safe, because they only affect data within this file -- they do not affect anything else on your computer. There are simple , better and best solutions below.

  a) Simple Solution,  Lower the macro security level in Excel

.....    Excel 2007:
1. Click on Excel Options in the Office button's window.
2. Click the Trust Center tab.
3. Click the Trust Center Settings button.
4. Click the Macro Settings tab.
5. Choose Enable all macros, and click OK.
6. Exit Excel then reopen this spreadsheet
  Excel 2003, Excel 2002, Excel 2000:
1. Click the Tools menu, then the Macro submenu, then choose Security.
2. Click the Security Level tab.
3. Choose Low, and click OK.

The drawback with this solution is that you might run a different spreadsheet of dubious origins that contains malicious macros, which might be triggered to run merely by opening it. Lowering Excel's macro security level as above allows such nasty macros to run. But if you only open trusted spreadsheets, it's ok.

  b) Better
Solution, Manually choose which spreadsheets to run each time

Set the macro security level in Excel to allow you to decide whether or not to run macros each time you open a spreadsheet. As per the simple solution above, but:

.....
  Excel 2007:
5. Choose Disable all macros with notification, and click OK.
6. Exit Excel then reopen this spreadsheet.
  Excel 2003, Excel 2002, Excel 2000:
3. Choose Medium, and click OK.

  c) Best Solution (only applies to  Excel 2007)

Designate the folder in which you store your GoldNerds spreadsheets as a trusted location, thereby allowing spreadsheets in that location to run their macros whilst still preventing macros from running in other spreadsheets that you happen to open:

 .....
  Excel 2007:
1. Choose Office -> Excel Options.
2. Click the Trust Center tab.
3. Click the Trust Center Settings button.
4. Click the Trusted Locations tab.
5. Click the Add New Location button.
6. Click the Browse button, and locate the folder with your GoldNerds spreadsheets
7. Click OK.
8. Exit Excel then reopen this spreadsheet.
  Excel 2003, Excel 2002, Excel 2000:
Not applicable.
Earlier versions of Excel do not have this option.

2.   Only two tabs visible

If only the Intro and Troubleshooting sheets are visible, it is because you haven't yet pressed the  "I Accept" button on the Disclaimer and Agreement window. Go to the Intro sheet and click on the "Show Disclaimer and Agreement" button (upper right).   Back to Top

Does this open the Disclaimer and Agreement window?

.........    Yes:  Press the "I Accept" button on that window and the tabs for the other sheets should open immediately.
    Yes (but):
It opened, but I can't see the buttons? See the screen size question below.
No: The macros in this spreadsheet aren't working. You need to allow the macros to run: follow the advice in  "1. Macros and security alerts ", then click the "Show Disclaimer and Agreement" button on the Intro sheet again.

If none of this works, download another spreadsheet from goldnerds.com and try again, and if that fails then email us for help.

3.   Share price updater - problems

The Updater button updates the share prices in this spreadsheet. It goes out over the Internet and gets the current share prices (20 minute delayed) for all the companies (and any investments of those companies). It takes about ten seconds. Sometimes Excel stops working the first time you use this button in a new spreadsheet. We’ve created a button to overcome this bug, it’s marked “Set the MSXML Reference” and placed inside our Troubleshooting worksheet.    Back to Top

4.   My buttons don’t work

Buttons allow you to sort, filter, score, and get price updates. They use macros to work. Your macros may have been turned off automatically by the security system in Excel. See Macros and security alerts.  Set your macro security level lower.

5.   Screen size is too small

GoldNerds is designed to fit on a minimum screen size of  1024 x 768 pixels. If you can’t see the scroll bars, or the button to click “I accept” on the disclaimer sheet, you’ll need to resize your screen. In Windows go to the Desktop, click to see “Properties” or “Personalize”, then follow prompts to change the screen resolution, or adjust the display settings.

6.   Names & headers scroll off the screen

Normally the column with company names is “frozen”. So is the header row at the top. These should stay fixed in place while the other cells shift as you scroll. If for some reason the ‘freeze’ is switched off, you can turn it back on.

.........   1. Click on the share price of company at the top of the page (highlight that cell).
   2. Go to the Window menu, choose ‘Freeze Panes’.

7.   Problems downloading

If you forget your password when you go to download a new spreadsheet from goldnerds.com.au, just click on the "Forgotten your password?" link in the Login box on the Downloads page and we'll send you a new password. If you forget your username or the email address you registered with us, then email us and we'll sort it out.  Back to Top

8.   A patchwork of oddly coloured cells

This is no accident. To help you know which cells have changed since the last update we’ve coloured the background of those cells. If you want to remove that, you can switch it off with a button in the “Control Panel”. To open the Control Panel, click Ctrl+U, or click the button “Control Panel.” (The button is in the Control Area - where there are a bunch of buttons together in the top left hand corner of the main Gold Stocks worksheet).

9.   Problems with the “One company” page

When you put a three letter code in the box, the View button does nothing. It’s an Excel glitch. Just click the cursor in an empty cell anywhere outside the three letter code box. Then click View. The view-macro doesn’t work when the cursor is left in the box.

10.  I've lost my password

Email David to arrange for a new one to be generated and emailled out to you. After you log in you can change it to something easier to remember.   Back to Top

11.  Do I have to download the spreadsheet every time?

Once you have downloaded a copy of the spreadsheet it's worth saving it. Under 'File' in the Excel menu, use 'Save As' (it's under 'Save'). That allows you to pick a spot on your computer to save the file. That way any notes, sorts or searches you make will be kept until the next time you download an updated copy, you won't need online access and it will be quicker to open it.

12.   I open it but can't see any companies

At the bottom of the window (left side) are coloured tabs. You should be able to see the following.  If you can only see two tabs ('Intro' and 'Troubleshooting'), then you either have a macro and security problem, or if you can see the Disclaimer window, but not the buttons 'I Accept', 'I Do Not Accept', then your screen size is too small. The answers to both are above. If you are not 'computer savvy' and find it all a bit too daunting, then phone us so we can talk you through it.
